Harrison Ford is one of America’s greatest movie stars, having starred in classic films such as Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies. His latest film, Extraordinary Measures, hits theaters on January 22. The beloved action hero sat down with Parade and discussed his favorite role of all: Fatherhood.
“My children have taught me a lot about parenting,” he says. “My first child was born when I was 25. Babies raising babies is not a pretty sight. I am much better at it now.”
At 67, he has found himself in the unexpected role of being the father figure to a young boy while also being the grandfather of two. Harrison has two sons, Ben, 42, and Willard, 40, by his first wife, Mary Marquardt, and has two children, Malcolm, 22, and Georgia, 18, by his second wife, screenwriter Melissa Mathison. His youngest is 9-year-old Liam, whom he “inherited” when he fell in love with the boy’s mother, actress Calista Flockhart, 45.
When talking about Liam, Ford’s eyes light up. "On the weekends, I do whatever Calista and Liam want to do,” he says. “We’ll take a couple of hours on Sunday morning to go motorcycle riding or go for a hike. I just made a birdhouse with my son.”
Is having a 9-year-old boy at this time in his life an unexpected joy?
Yeah,” Ford nods. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. The unexpected part was certainly true and the joy part is also true. I think Liam was about 6 or 8 months old when I met him and Calista. We have been together ever since.”
