A Lil Positivity: Brown Ballerinas Misty Copeland, Ashley Murphy And Ebony Williams Cover Pointe Mag

Black women are sweeping the ballet world. Despite still facing constant discrimination in the dance world, Black ballerinas are on the come-up.

In a first-ever all Black Ballerina feature, Ashley Murphy from Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ebony Williams of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and the American Ballet Theater’s own Misty Copeland cover the June/July cover of Pointe Magazine. These graceful ladies are declared “beyond role models” on the magazine’s cover, as they shatter discriminatory norms in ballet and advocate for and recruit more brown ballerinas.

Between this, the @BlackGirlsDoBallet Instagram page, and images and stories of Black ballerinas on Tumblr and Pinterest, our lil brown baby ballerinas have plenty of examples to look up to! Will you be grabbing a copy of the magazine for yourself or the lil dancer in your life?

Peep more pics of these ladies and other black ballerinas in action on the following pages:

The Carter Diaries: Beyonce Covers TIME Magazine’s “Most Influential People” Issue & Talks Blue Ivy

Beyonce Covers TIME Magazine’s “Most Influential People” Issue

Blonde-haired busy bee Beyonce has snagged the cover for TIME Magazine’s annual “100 Most Influential People” issue. She had this to say about which people in her life have been the most influential:

“I feel like my mother, my daughter have been probably the most influential.

And being a mother, becoming a mother and looking at my daughter in her eyes made me into a woman and made me very very strong.”

This has been a great week for African-American women in the entertainment industry thus far, as current Hollywood “It” girl Lupita Nyong’o was also named People magazine’s “Most Beautiful Woman In The World” earlier this week.

Kudos to our lovely ladies of color doing their thing in the biggest of ways!

Racist Or Nah? Comedian Louis C.K. Admits He Started Sitting At The “Black Kids’ Table” At Mostly White Jr. High Only Because They Were Black

We’re not sure racist is the word but isn’t it a relief to have a famous white person ADMIT flat out to having a fascination with black people?

Louis C.K. Sat With Black Kids At Lunch Because He “Had To Know Them”

Our friends at GQ Magazine shared this interesting cover story they just did with actor/comedian Louis C.K.. Here are a few details:

Comedy is subjective, but not with Louis C.K. He’s the best, which is why we named him the funniest man alive. GQ’s Andrew Corsello catches up with the May cover man and explores his comedic genius.

After reading the article we had to share this one particular quote with you about how Louis’ desire to get to know the black kids at his mostly white school helped him overcome the discomfort he felt being out of place at their table. Peep the excerpt below:

Discomfort underlies all of C.K.’s work—it’s often both medium and message—and he seems to regard it as a moral imperative. “You’ve got to embrace discomfort,” he tells me at one point. “It’s the only way you can put yourself in situations where you can learn, and the only way you can keep your senses fresh once you’re there.”

Black kids were bused in to C.K.’s otherwise all-white junior high school. Szekely, an incurably curious boy who grew up to be what Chris Rock has called “the blackest white guy I know,” wanted to know them. Had to. So he began sitting at their table at lunchtime. “It was awkward and scary, but I made a lot of black friends, and that was the only way to do it. It had to be uncomfortable. It was actually racist, ’cause I was sitting down with these kids only because they were black. Sometimes discomfort is the only way through.”

This brings up some interesting questions about what racism really is — cuz to us this sounds a lot more like curiosity and maybe a touch of ignorance.

What say you?

Don’t Blame Yeezy: Even In A ‘Kini, Kimmy Cakes And Kardashian Klan Can’t Move As Many Magazine Covers!

kim kardashian post-baby bikini body

Are the checks about to stop coming in for the Kardashians? The filthy rich reality star family are no longer moving as many tabloid covers off the newsstands, and one publisher is putting the blame on Kanye!

According to Page Six reports:

Not only are the Kardashians’ TV ratings sinking, but their faces are failing to sell supermarket weeklies.

“It’s over. The fatigue factor has really set in,” one magazine publisher told me. “None of the Kardashians, either alone or together, is selling.”

Sources say Jann Wenner paid $110,000 for a heavily retouched photo of Kim Kardashian in a white bikini, which he splashed on the Dec. 23 cover of Us Weekly under the headline, “My Body Is Back.”

But the glossy, which usually sells about a half million a week, sold fewer than 400,000 copies, an insider with access to circulation reports told me.

Bauer’s In Touch dropped 70,000 copies from its average circulation with a recent Kardashian cover, and another Bauer title, Life & Style, dropped 50,000.

Star magazine, from American Media Inc., sold 50,000 copies less than its newsstand draw of 325,000 with its Dec. 2 issue blaring, “Kris & Bruce: Divorce Bombshell: Kim Helps Kris Hide $25 million.”

“I think it’s because Kanye West is so nasty and aggressive. People don’t like him,” the publisher said. “It’s rubbed off on Kim. It’s rubbed off on the whole family.”

Marc Berman of TV Media Insights had a different explanation for why ratings of E!’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and its various spinoffs have sunk.

“It’s simple — overkill,” Berman said. “The Kardashians are everywhere. They never take a break.”

When “KUWTK” debuted in 2007, more than twice as many viewers tuned in than do today. The ninth season premieres Sunday, Jan. 19.

“E! should give them a break and take them off the air for a season,” Berman said.

Julia Roberts seems to agree. She told In Touch, “I love ‘Project Runway.’ I’ve also seen ‘[Real] Housewives’ a little bit!” How about the Kardashians? She said, “They’re still on TV . . . aren’t they?”

Magazine spokespersons were not available for comment.

SMH @ them trying to blame it on Kanye! It’s not his fault! He fell for the okey doke too. Do you think it’s about to be a wrap for the Kardashians?

Janelle Monae Tells ESSENCE She Doesn’t Have To Show Skin And Wants To Show Girls There’s “Another Way”

ESSENCE May Cover-Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae and her beautiful grill just landed the cover of ESSENCE Magazine!

Here’s what readers can expect from the cover story:

Janelle Monáe is no ordinary artist. She lives, breathes and dreams of being true to herself, inspiring young women and, of course, imagining interplanetary escapades. ESSENCE Contributing Writer Lola Ogunnaike visits the singer’s quirky Wondaland studio and discovers the beauty and brilliance of her world. Monáe is also slated to perform on the Mainstage during the ESSENCE Festival, held July 4th weekend in New Orleans.

And here’s an interesting quote from the story:

“Showing my skin is not what makes me s3xy. I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way…”— Janelle Monáe

Oooh we like! Sounds like she is trying to balance out all the Rihannas of the world.

For The Ladies: Idris Elba Brings His Man-Bangin’ness To The March Cover Of British UK!

Yaaaaassssssssssssss! We love us some Idris Elba so this one was definitely in order!

Via Celeb**chy:

He’s tipped to be the first black Bond but Idris Elba just doesn’t see why the ladies fall at his feet.

‘The irony is I wake up every morning, look at myself in the mirror and think, “Woah, I look like a piece of s***”,’ said the Hackney lad turned Hollywood superstar. ‘You watch yourself age and it’s hard to feel like a sex symbol.’

The 40-year-old said while he did not take the label seriously, he knew how to use it to bag the big roles.

‘I’m not sure what it is they see, not to mention that, personally, I feel very awkward. There’s no way all those women would ever sleep with me and go, “I really liked him”. Some of them would go, “He was really boring or he was a bit aggressive or, urgh, actor.” But it’s a compliment and it’s a massive tool to use in sculpting a career, especially with what I do for a living because I work in the face business. So it’s a compliment and I use it accordingly.’

And bag the big roles he has after beating Tom Cruise, 50, to the role in new sci-fi flick Pacific Rim and being plucked to play Nelson Mandela in the forthcoming Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

As for a life as 007, he told GQ magazine: ‘It’s a rumour. And, I have to tell you, if the producers of Bond thought that I was self-campaigning, it would be such a turn-off. I’m flattered, obviously but I’ve been advised to just pipe down about it.’

He blamed the incumbent spy for shaking and stirring.

‘Apparently, Daniel Craig said I’d be a great Bond. Daniel, why did you say that? Dropped me right in it! What an honour it would be, but also, what an indication of change. I know Ian Fleming lived in Jamaica for a long time, didn’t he? I think it’s interesting to think what he would have made of a black man playing Bond.’

Sorry but this man is delicious! He sounds like he knows he has an obnoxious personality though. It’s cool Idris — just stand there and look good please while we watch.
